Dining Out Southeast: Munoz Mexican Grill, Trussville, AL

A friend of mine highly recommended this restaurant and distinctly recommended one particular dish.  But more on that in a few minutes.  While out on a Sunday afternoon trip to Birmingham, we stopped in the nearby suburb of Trussville for a late lunch.

Munoz Mexican Grill is located in a small strip mall on U.S. Highway 11.  There was a nice sized crowd for 2:00 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon, but we were promptly seated in a huge booth, and chips and salsa were delivered almost immediately.

The salsa was very fresh tasting with diced onions and cilantro visibly present.  I really dislike it when you are served what looks to be a cousin to ketchup with absolutely no flavor.  This version received a thumbs up from me.

You can tell a lot about a Tex-Mex restaurant by the cheese dip which is served along with the portion size.  Here's our VERY generous order (8 oz.) which was served piping hot and extra creamy just as it is supposed to be.  ($4.95)

Sweet Harold's go-to order at Tex-Mex restaurants seldom varies.  He either has tamales (which sometimes are not even on the menu) at which time he defaults to the chicken chimichanga.  On Sunday, he had the best of both worlds.  The chimichanga consisted of a large flour tortilla deep-fried and topped with lettuce, sour cream, and guacamole. It was as served with rice and refried beans.  ($12.95)  There was an ample portion of chicken, and he said it was seasoned well.  The tamale ($2.00) was served without sauce, but he enjoyed it anyway.

My friend had raved about Shrimp Chiles Rellenos.  ($12.95)  I had to give them a try.  Now, look at this serving!  Two LARGE Chiles Rellenos with 8 shrimp between them.  Also included with the shrimp was a mixture of fajita-like tomatoes, onions, and peppers.  Very well seasoned and the shrimp were perfectly cooked.  They were served with a side salad topped with tomatoes and guacamole.

I added an order of refried beans ($2.25) for myself and they were what you would find in most Tex-Mex restaurants.  The addition of some of that yummy salsa on top was delicious.

Will we go there again if we're in the area?  Most likely.  Service was friendly and efficient.  Drinks were refilled without being requested.

Stop in and check out their large menu selection.  You are sure to find something yummy to try.
