Dining Out South-Atlantic States: Waffle Hut, Flatwoods, WV

As you know, we "ran away from home" last weekend and traveled all the way to Flatwoods, West Virginia, to visit the Fiestaware Outlet located there.  I've said it before, and I'll repeat it again.  I LOVE West Virginia.  I love the mountains, the scenery, the people, AND the food.

After enjoying an hour or so digging through the "seconds bins" at the outlet, we were hungry and went in search of lunch.  The Waffle Hut called our names.

Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and open 24 hours a day, you can tell that this restaurant is a favorite of the community.  As we were seated, I felt as if I was walking back in time to restaurants of my childhood.  We were warmly greeted by April as our server, and she was a delight!  She helped us choose the perfect lunch.

The menu lists a large selection of breakfast items, including pancakes, waffles, eggs, omelets, etc.  The lunch and dinner menus are loaded with traditional meat and two or three dishes, sandwiches, and burgers.  A big plus is they serve Sweet Tea!

Sweet Harold went back and forth for a bit before deciding on a Meat and Two.  Here's his Country Fried Steak (with gravy), mashed potatoes (with gravy), and slaw.  He was offered a choice of rolls or cornbread and chose rolls.

The freshly cooked cube steak was breaded and lightly fried.  Even the gravies on the same plate are a contrasting color and flavor.  The steak is topped with a tasty white gravy, and the mashed potatoes are served with a rich brown gravy.

Before the meal arrived, he wistfully said he should have asked if he could have a biscuit instead. April to the rescue!  When I asked if a biscuit would be possible, she quickly went to the kitchen and returned with this HUGE biscuit.  Harold gave his thumbs-up sign of approval!

I wasn't in the mood for a burger or a plate lunch, but the Stacked Roast Beef Sandwich caught my attention on the menu.  I decided to try their beer-battered onion rings as my side item.  The sandwich was not what I had envisioned, but it was above and beyond the deliciousness that I expected.  A large sesame seeded bun stuffed with diced roast beef and served with a heavenly horseradish cream sauce on the side so that a diner can put as much or little as they want.  The onion rings were served HOT (always a plus) and were very crunchy and not even a little bit greasy.

We left pleasantly full and grateful that we were able to enjoy a meal with our new friends at the Waffle Hut in Flatwoods!  Jeannie was the cashier as we were leaving, and we're super glad we were able to meet her as well!
