Dining Out Southeast: Pell City Steakhouse, Pell City, AL

Pell City Steakhouse has been a fixture in this small town for decades.  We had eaten there years ago, long before this blog was even a thought.  Saturday afternoon, we visited again.

The restaurant is retro, to put it mildly.  When you step through the door, you are automatically transported to the '60s-'70s.

We were impressed with the steps taken to comply with our "new normal."  Diners were spaced at a safe distance, and a station was set up at the front of the dining room where servers cleaned and sanitized the menus after each order was placed.

Along with steaks and seafood, the Pell City Steakhouse offers daily meat and three or meat and two selections.  While we perused the menu, we ordered cheese sticks and marinara sauce.  Yummy and gooey.

Sweet Harold couldn't resist the country fried steak with gravy, coleslaw, green limas, and mashed potatoes. I neglected to get a picture of the steak once he cut into the generous serving.  The potatoes were homemade, the slaw was fresh and nicely dressed, and green limas are his favorite veggies.  He was well pleased with his lunch!

I chose the catfish fillet dinner with a side salad and baked potato as the sides.  Tell me this isn't a perfect retro salad complete with those crunchy red/brown bacon bits.  I loved it.

I was pleasantly surprised to see two onion rings served alongside my fish, baked potato, and hush puppies.  Outside of my kitchen, these were the best onion rings I've ever eaten!

The fish was crispy and well seasoned.  The potato was perfectly baked.  Now to the hush puppies.  They were excellent—no added corn or cheese, etc.  Just an authentic cornbread batter hush puppy.

We couldn't pass up dessert even though we were already very full.  I zeroed in on this chocolate cream pie as soon as we walked through the front door.  The dessert cooler with all was in my direct line of vision the entire meal.  This pie was calling to me. Creamy chocolate filling with a tender shortbread crust, this pie was worth every calorie.

As soon as he saw the lemon meringue, Harold's decision was made.  Look at that mile-high meringue!  The filling was tart and lemony just as it should be.  Check out the vanilla wafers making up the back of the crust!

We enjoyed our lunch.  The service was attentive.  We appreciated the attention to sanitizing and social distancing.

We enjoyed an appetizer, two generous entrees, two desserts, and some great sweet tea.  Our total bill?  $40 and some change.  Impressive!
