Dining Out Southeast: Uptown Cantina, Birmingham, AL

to a

We went to Birmingham last week to attend a concert, and chose Uptown Cantina for our pre-show meal.  It's located in the Uptown District and is within easy walking distance of the BJCC Concert Hall.

We started our meal with the salsa pictured above that's included with the Bottomless Chips and Salsa along with an order of queso.

The chips were light and tasty and seasoned with just the right amount of salt.  The salsa was flavorful and look at all the spices in that bowl!  The queso was served nice and hot and was creamy with the right amount of heat.

We both decided we'd go with the Three Taco Dinner which is served with both rice and beans.  You can select your style of taco:  gringo (topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and shredded cheese) or street (diced onion, cilantro, salsa).  Next, choose your protein (added bonus, you can mix and match!) and then pick the type of tortilla (corn, flour, or hard shell).

I'll post Sweet Harold's meal first.  He enjoyed the Gringo Tacos with flour tortillas.  His proteins were shrimp, morita chicken, and picadillo beef!

His favorite?  The picadillo beef!  I know, I would have thought shrimp, too!  The beef was deliciously flavorful, the shrimp were tender and well seasoned, and the chicken had some heat!

My choices:  Street Tacos with a hard shell, shrimp, carnita, and carne asada.

The tacos were great! I loved the shrimp, the carnitas were spot on, and the steak was tender and well seasoned.

The rice and beans weren't your typical restaurant "rice and beans" and were a great addition to the meal.
