Dining Out Southeast: The Shack BBQ, Talladega, AL

We took a road trip yesterday to Talladega in search of a few antique/junk stores.  We came up short on great buys, but on the way out of Talladega on the way to Pell City, AL, we passed by The Shack on Highway 34 (a/k/a 7744 Stemley Bridge Road, Talladega, AL  35160).  Yes, we passed by.

Sweet Harold casually mentioned he was beginning to get a little hungry and he saw quite a few cars in the parking lot of that BBQ joint back there, and did I smell that pork cooking?  lol

So what did we do?  What any smart person would do.  We turned around and went back for lunch!

If you're looking for fine dining, keep driving.  IF you're looking for authentic hickory-smoked BBQ, generous servings, delicious sides, friendly service, AND the BEST homemade lemonade I've had lately, you've found the spot!

I ordered the regular BBQ sandwich plate which comes with two side items.  I chose fries and baked beans.  I barely finished this sandwich.  The large-sized would be enough for two people!  You're given the choice of mild or hot sauce.  I went with mild but noted that there were three bottles on the table labeled mild, hot, and sweet.  I did sample the others and they were all very tasty.  The baked beans were seasoned well and the fries were served HOT which we all know is a good thing.

Sweet Harold chose the same/type sandwich and baked beans and replaced the fries with slaw.

Now I want you to notice something in this picture.  Do you see that "bark" the dark spot in the meat? This is also known as "outside meat."  When the outer part is added in with the "inside meat," you have a great flavor that has been developed from HOURS of hickory smoke.  That, my friends, is a sign of a great BBQ sandwich or BBQ plate.

Here are a few pictures of the menu to let you see all the great offerings they have available.

If you're passing through or around the Talladega area, give The Shack a try.  Don't forget to order the lemonade.  You can come back and thank me later.

  4. My family and I have been eating at The Shack for about 28 years. Our FAVORITE. We drive from Oxford at least once a month, sometimes more to eat their delicious bbq. Always fast friendly service with plenty on your plate. The taste and quality have been consistent all these years. If you had trouble finishing the sandwich, you should try the bbq salad, my husband and son love them, I prefer the bbq plate with sliced meat

  8. Ask for the Shack Stack on your next trip. You can get baked beans on the side, but you won't be able to eat it all.
