Dining Out Southeast: The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar

We made a drive to Birmingham this past weekend to shop at one of my favorite stores, Williams Sonoma at the Summit. It was lunchtime and I searched online for "Restaurants at the Summit."  The name "The Cowfish" immediately caught my eye. Upon checking out their website found HERE, I learned that The Cowfish is America's original "sushi burger bar" featuring an inventive menu including innovative sushi rolls, craft 1/2 pound burgers and a Burgushi - a cutting edge fusion including sushi rolls created with burger ingredients and sandwiches made with sushi ingredients.  The extensive menu also includes family-style appetizers, milkshakes (they're big!), craft beers, entree sized salads and homemade desserts.  What's not to love about all those options?

When we pulled into the parking lot and I saw this fellow, I knew we were in for a very fun time!

The decor is fun and bright with huge aquariums, quirky artwork, and clean lines with the seating area.  We didn't utilize the bar on this visit, but the menu selection was extensive with, as expected, fun drink titles.

Our server was well versed on the menu and took the time to explain different items on the menu when we had questions.  Service was prompt and efficient.

We started with the Crab Rangoon Dip:  Creamy rich Rangoon with Parmesan panko crust, wonton crisps, Thai sweet chili sauce, and chives  $11.00  This appetizer is exactly as expected.  They've taken a classic dish, Crab Rangoon, and taken it up several notches on the flavor scale.  Thick, creamy, rich, and FULL of crab, it was served hot and bubbling.  We both loved the wonton crisps with the delicious chili sauce.

There are many 1/2 pound burgers on the menu to choose from and I almost chose the Black Truffle version.  Instead, this one won!

The Boursin Bacon Burger:  Half pound burger, garlic and herb Boursin cheese, applewood bacon, sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, onion roll    $14.00  The shoestring fries were served HOT and I asked for a side of Cowfish Sauce for dipping.

This burger was cooked perfectly to my requested "medium well."  The applewood bacon was delicious and the perfect chewy/crunchy level.  The sauteed mushrooms along with the grilled onions were cooked just right and the Boursin cheese took this burger over the top.  It was messy, it was ooey-gooey, it was delicious.

When I saw that Thai Cucumbers ($3.50) was listed as a side item, I knew I had to try them.  They were served along with thinly sliced red onion and mixed with a spicy vinegar dressing.  And how about those carrot strings?  These were exactly as I thought they would be:  spicy, zesty, crunchy!

And yes, Sweet Harold was very happy to be able to have BOTH burgers and sushi!

He selected the Fusion Specialty Bento Box:  A combination meal featuring both burger and sushi including the featured mini-burger of the week, sweet potato fries, Thai cucumbers, edamame, and choice of a 4 piece Fusion Specialty Roll or 3 pieces of mixed nigiri  $16.00

Mini burger topped with boursin cheese.  Condiments were provided on the table.  He reported that the sweet potato fries were crunchy and delicious.  The edamame was perfectly steamed and well seasoned.  He agreed with my assessment of the Thai cucumber salad:  a great sweet/sour combination.

Sweet Harold chose the Mark's Roll:  Fresh tuna, jalapeƱo, cream cheese, kani, scallions inside, coated with panko and flash-fried. Topped with Japanese mayo and sriracha. Served with ponzu dipping sauce

This was his first time to try fried sushi.  He reported it was different but good and very fresh.  The  Japanese mayo/sriracha was a nice touch.

Our final assessment:  We are eagerly awaiting our next visit to try more new menu items, especially those milkshakes!
