Valentine's Day Meal 2021

I cooked a Valentine's Day meal for Sweet Harold and my mom this afternoon.  My mother is 90 and my dad passed away last August.  They had been married for 72 years.  I didn't want her to be alone on this Valentine's Day.

Here's our meal!

We started with seared scallops.  To sear scallops properly, pat them as dry as possible and salt one side.  In a large skillet, heat enough oil just to cover the bottom over high heat until the oil shimmers.  Place the scallops (salted side down) in a clockwise pattern.  Let the scallops cook until they reach a golden brown. Using tongs, flip them over in the same clockwise pattern as you placed them in the skillet.  Add a tablespoon of butter to the skillet and swirl the skillet to distribute the butter evenly.  Using a spoon, quickly cover each scallop with the bubbling butter.  When the second side has reached a golden brown, remove them from the skillet and serve immediately.

I neglected to take a picture of our green salad with blue cheese dressing....oops!

Our main course was beef bourguignon and gougères.  This dish features melt in your mouth cubes of beef that has been braised for over an hour in red wine along with onions, carrots, and garlic.  I served this dish over mashed potatoes.

These little bites of heaven are a rich and cheesy bread that are fun to make.  This batch didn't rise as much as some I've made in the past.  I think I possibly went a little heavy-handed with the gruyere cheese!  But they were delicious nonetheless.

We finished our meal with coffee and triple chocolate brownies.

We had an enjoyable afternoon and had a very nice time being together.
