It's fun to think about all the different types of burgers and I love to come up with different combinations. This week I purchased a pound of mild Italian sausage and thought of all the toppings that would be yummy to enjoy with this burger.
But first, Arnold's Keto Hamburger Buns ! These buns are full of fiber and great taste! It's great to be able to enjoy a burger and not have to think of the high carb count in traditional hamburger buns.
I knew the Italian sausage would be nicely seasoned, but I added a little granulated garlic to the meat. Since I was grilling the burgers, I got out the trusty grill basket for the sliced onions and baby bella mushrooms. I knew they would be perfect as toppings.
Here's the recipe!
1 lb. mild (or hot) Italian sausage
1/2 t. granulated garlic
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. freshly ground black pepper
hamburger buns
Toppings:
Sliced mozzarella cheese
1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
8 ounces, sliced baby Portabella mushrooms
2 T. sliced peperoncini peppers
lettuce leaves
whatever condiments you like (mayo, mustard, ketchup)
Season the sausage with the granulated garlic, salt, and pepper. Divide the Italian sausage into four equal parts and form into patties.
Preheat the grill and place burgers onto hot grill grates.
Place the onions and mushrooms into a grill basket and lightly salt and pepper and drizzle with 1 t. of olive oil. Place the grill basket onto the grill.
Let burgers sear for 2 - 3 minutes and lower the heat to medium-high, and turn a quarter turn using a metal spatula. Let the burgers cook another few minutes and turn to the other side. Repeat the process.
While the burgers are grilling, continue stirring the onions and mushrooms occasionally. Use a pot holder or oven mitt to handle the basket because it will be hot!
When the burgers are cooked to your preferred degree of doneness, lower the heat to low and top with the sliced mozzarella. Cover and let the cheese melt and get nice and gooey.
While the cheese is melting, butter the buns and put them face down on the grill to lightly toast.
Remove the burgers from the grill and put directly on the toasted buns. Place the burgers either on individual plates or a serving platter.
Now it's time to remove the grilled veggies from the grill and load up those burgers!
The peperoncini peppers are a great substitute for dill pickles!
This is certainly a twist on traditional burgers, but they were delicious!
