Grilled French Onion Burger

Y'all know I am always on the trail to develop a new burger !  Yesterday I came up with a great new recipe for a French Onion Steak over noodles using a Kinder's seasoning product which incorporates the flavors of French Onion Soup.

I loved the flavor profile of that seasoning blend, so today I decided to give it a go with some grilled burgers.  I knew I needed onions and Swiss or Gruyère to mimic French Onion Soup.  You'll cook the onions with additional seasoning in a cast iron skillet placed directly on the grill grates while the burgers are cooking.

Here we go!

2 lbs. ground chuck
Kinder's French Onion Seasoning
1 medium yellow onion diced
1 T. butter or olive oil
8 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
Hamburger Buns
Your favorite condiments

Shape ground chuck into 8 burgers.  Place on a plate and season liberally with the French Onion seasoning.

Preheat grill on high until temperature reaches 450 degrees F.  Place burger patties on grill.

Add the butter or olive oil to a small cast iron skillet and place on the grill.  When butter is melted, add the diced onions and sprinkle in 1/2 t. Kinder's French Onion seasoning.

Cover grill and adjust heat to maintain heat at 400 degrees F.  Let burgers cook for 3 - 4 minutes and then carefully rotate the burger patties a quarter turn.  You're going to have some great grill marks on this burgers!

Cook an additional 2 - 3 minutes and then flip burgers to cook the other side.  Stir onions occasionally as they begin to soften.

These onions smelled so delicious!

When the burgers reach your desired level of doneness, top with the cheese and lower heat to the lowest heat available.  Close the grill and let the residual heat melt the cheese.

If desired, you can butter the hamburger buns and let them toast briefly on the grill.

When ready to eat, spoon some of the onions on top of the burger as you add whatever condiments you'd like!
