Today we were back on the BBQ Trail! We traveled about 35 miles northwest to Snead, Alabama which is located in Blount County. Blount County is named the "Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama." It has more historic covered bridges standing within a single county than any other in the state. There's a Covered Bridge Festival each Fall in the county seat of Oneonta.
The restaurant has a large parking area with easy access to the entrance. You'll be pleased, as I was, to see the hickory wood ready to be used for smoking the meat!
When we entered the downstairs dining area, we were warmly greeted by not only the staff, but by this fireplace!
We were grateful that we were finally able to be seated and review an actual menu instead of ordering at a counter.
And finally, real silverware, glasses, and plates! No styrofoam plates and no plastic forks. Things were looking up!
Sweet tea was delicious. We're really feeling positive about our choice today!
We ordered onion rings with ranch dressing as our appetizer. The onions were thinly sliced and lightly breaded. Not greasy at all. The ranch dressing was thick enough for a fork to stand and was very tasty.
I once again rolled the pulled pork dice. My fingers were crossed for a true pulled pork. Would this be the day? Yes, sir and ma'am....today was the day!
This pulled pork was delicious and tender enough to eat as is with no sauce. This is actually what I've been searching for at the KCBS BBQ competitions. Pork that you can actually enjoy as is with a distinct hickory smoked flavor is always a treat.
Of course, I did add a light touch of the tangy BBQ sauce to have a true flavor test.
My side choices today were French Fries and Baked Beans. Yes, I keep taking one for the Fleur de Lolly team.
First the fries...These are what I've been searching for! They were served HOT. At last!
Now on to the baked beans. Y'all know the other two times I've tried for baked beans I've either had loosey goosey or extremely gummy beans. These were the perfect consistency and well seasoned. A little extra pork added to the beans made them All That!
I didn't take a separate picture of the Texas Toast for some reason, but it was lightly toasted and buttered with not one grain of garlic salt. Yay!
Now we'll move on to Sweet Harold's meal. He continues to try the smoked chicken.
He was thrilled with this half smoked chicken! Served piping hot, and with that hickory smoke flavor wafting upward, he was eager to dig in. He prefers the leg/thigh because most times the breast meat portion is dry. That was definitely not the case today. Everything was juicy and flavorful. That takes some skill when you're smoking chicken. Kudos!
His sides today were cole slaw and potato salad. He enjoyed both and couldn't find a negative to either.
We opted to share a piece of Butterfinger Pie. The graham cracker crust was homemade and the filling was creamy with little bits of Butterfinger folded inside.
Overview of our meal: atmosphere was warm and welcoming; extra points for being able to order at the table; food was delicious and exactly what I want at a BBQ joint. Service by Brian was great and he took care of us in an efficient and professional manner.
Our Score 0 - 100: 88 We certainly will be back!
Thank you - we locals appreciate you
