2025 Alabama BBQ Tour: Cullman County - Johnny's BBQ, Cullman, Alabama

We drove to Athens, AL this past Saturday for a BBQ judging event.  As we came home, we decided we'd stop for supper in Cullman County and check off another stop on our 2025 BBQ tour!

Now a BBQ restaurant has to be doing something right to be in business since 1963.  So let's get to the details.

The dining room was large and decorated with a mixture of a little bit of everything.

We were greeted and told to sit wherever we wanted.  I chose a corner booth where we could have a good view of all the goings on while we dined.

Our server, Destiny, took our drink orders (both sweet tea) and our appetizer order (onion rings) while we discussed the menu offerings.

The tea was spot on and refreshing.  The onion rings weren't the homemade sliced and battered variety, but were tasty nonetheless.

Here are pictures of the menu offerings so you can see what you would have chosen!

Sweet Harold chose the 1/2 smoked chicken plate with cole slaw and potato salad.  White BBQ sauce was served separately.

Look at the gorgeous color on that chicken!  The inside was juicy and had a delicious smoked flavor.  It's always a challenge to smoke chicken without drying out the breast meat.  Johnny's BBQ met that challenge head on!

As regular readers of the blog are aware, I do know a thing about white bbq sauce.  If you're unaware, I won the 2017 Duke's Mayonnaise nationwide recipe contest for my white bbq sauce.  Their version is amazing.  It's everything a white bbq sauce is supposed to be:  vinegary, peppery, tart, and tangy.

He loved the slaw and enjoyed the cut of the cabbage, the seasoning, and the amount of dressing to cabbage.  If you don't like pickles, remember to ask for your slaw not to be topped with one!

Now to the potato salad.  The menu noted it was their "special" potato salad.  It had a generous helping of yellow mustard and was almost smooth in texture.

As always, I chose the pulled pork plate and had the baked beans, fries, and macaroni and cheese for my sides.  White bread was served on the side.

The pulled pork was a nice mixture of bark from the exterior and well smoked inside meat.  The sauce was thin and sweet.  No smoky or vinegar taste was noted.

The baked beans were a nice consistency and had added pork.

The fries were just generic fries, but were served hot and had a nice crunch.

Macaroni and cheese was smooth and creamy, not baked.  I liked the flavor and the consistency was perfect.

Yes, again, we brought two go-boxes home for another meal!

We had to try some chocolate pie.  Real meringue, delicious rich chocolate filling, and a perfect crust.

If you're in the Cullman area, drop in and give them a try!

Standouts:  Smoked chicken, white bbq sauce, sweet tea, pulled pork, and baked beans.  Also, great service by Destiny!!

Point takeaways:  red bbq sauce was too sweet for our liking, generic onion rings and fries.

Our Score:  85
