Dining Out - Gulf Coast - Firefly

I was fortunate to be able to dine at Firefly in Panama City Beach this weekend.  Yes, sometimes a quick lunch in one of the numerous seafood shacks around the beach is perfect.  PLEASE stay away from chain restaurants when you're on vacation!  And my rule of thumb is this:  NEVER eat in a restaurant that you have in your hometown, i.e., fast food, Pizza Hut, Shoney's, etc. etc. etc.

And yes, Firefly is well worth the saving up a little extra cash to add to your vacation budget.  No buffet dining here.  A wonderful dining experience from the time you walk in the door until the last sip of your after dinner beverage.  Yes, you ARE worth that.

Here's the Firefly Tree in the middle of the restaurant.  Look closely and you'll see fireflies up in the branches!

We started out the evening with an Orange Mojito-tini $8 (Hangar One “Mandarin Blossom” Vodka, Fresh Lime, Mint, Simple Syrup) and a 007 Martini $9 (Three Olives Vodka, Tangueray Gin, Splash of Lillet, Shaken not Stirred, Lemon Twist)

Jordan, our excellent server, promptly brought the bread basket with three flavored toppings:  Red Pepper Cream Cheese, Roma Tomato Spread and Raspberry Butter. My favorite?  The Red Pepper Cream Cheese.

Now on to our appetizers.  I have dreamed of the She Crab Soup ($8) for four years.  Surely it couldn't have been THAT delicious, could it?  Oh yes.  It was even BETTER than I remembered.

Sweet Harold chose this one's cousin:  Crab en Croute - $11 Jumbo Lump Crab in Puff Pastry, Sherry Cream Sauce. He could have shared more than the one bite he gave me!  But of course, I could have shared more than the half spoonful of the soup.  hmmmmm.

The Wedge Salad called to me, so that was my selection. Iceberg Wedge - $7 Sugar Cured Bacon, Grape Tomatoes, Red Onion, Creamy Bleu Cheese.  Yes, this lovely salad was as fresh and crunchy and delicious as the picture shows.  And it was easily enough for two people to share.

We always try to order different items to be able to enjoy as many items on the menu as possible.  And I'm almost always the one who selects the Caesar Salad.  This time it was Harold's turn.  But, as with all selections at Firefly, this one was not presented as your ordinary Caesar Salad. Traditional Caesar with Jumbo Lump Blue Crab - $12 served in a Parmesan Tuile topped with Shaved Romano.  SO beautiful!

Now on to the entrees.  Jordan as extremely helpful in answering our questions and assisting with our selections.  Here's Harold choice: Pan Seared Long Island Duck Breast - $28 Grilled Asparagus, Chef’s Potato and A Honey Balsamic Drizzle.

His review is as follows:  The duck breast was very flavorful and cooked medium rare.  The creamed potatoes and asparagus were perfect with the duck and I loved the honey balsamic glaze.

And I chose.........Medallions Of Veal Tenderloin and Sliced Sea Scallops - $29 served over spinach Orzo Alfredo with a Mushroom Marsala Demi Glace.  I would NEVER thought of serving Veal with Scallops.  But thankfully, the Chef did.  The veal was fork tender and the scallops perfectly seared.  The orzo would make a wonderful dish in and of itself.

We had planned on dessert, but after this meal, it was humanly impossible to eat one more bite.  Once again, this restaurant provided a meal that will be on my Top Ten List of all time favorite meals.

Thank you Firefly!
