Today we traveled less than 10 miles from home to Wills Creek Winery. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, with gorgeous scenery in every direction, this had all the makings of the perfect afternoon.
Wills Creek Winery offers events throughout the year including brunch on Sundays. Today, we enjoyed a BBQ lunch courtesy of Southern BBQ Company.
There were two options available for the meal: pulled pork or pork tenderloin, slaw (either vinegar based or mayo based), baked beans, and a roll so you could make your own sandwich or enjoy as a BBQ plate. No surprise to any of my faithful blog readers that I chose the pulled pork/vinegar based slaw option. Also, no surprise, Sweet Harold chose the opposite option so we could try both!
First, the pork: both options were well seasoned with a distinct smoky flavor. The sauce had just the right amount of heat, was nice and thick, and was served alongside. I appreciate the "on the side" option so I can add just the right amount for me.
The beans had a great flavor and the addition of pulled pork was nice. I added a little of the sauce on top of the beans. Yum.
I loved the vinegar based slaw because the sharp tanginess of the dressing was a nice contrast to the richness of the baked beans. Sweet Harold gave a thumbs up to his mayo based slaw.
The Winery offers wine tasting of up to 20 varieties (which are also available for purchase), a wine making class, and a beautiful setting either on the deck or patio to enjoy either a glass or bottle of wine.
After our leisurely lunch, we enjoyed a glass of pinot grigio and watermelon wine. They were both delicious and we even brought some home!
A great place to go. Wish it were closer.
