Dining Out Southeast: Half Shell Oyster House, Trussville, AL

We went to Birmingham last night to see Hamilton at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center.  It was a great performance.

Before we enjoyed the show, we dined at Half Shell Oyster House.  It was our first time to visit, but it won't be our last!

As always, I say if you choose a restaurant with their specialty in their name, that's what you should try.  So we started our meal with a dozen raw oysters.  These were icy cold and freshly shucked.  Served with cocktail sauce and horseradish (plus saltines) these were an ideal beginning for our meal.

I forego the fried oysters for a more carb friendly choice and selected the Seafood Stuffed Portabello Mushrooms.  Two large portabellas stuffed with lump crabmeat, shrimp, minced chipotle peppers, roasted red peppers, and spinach.  They were garnished with lemon aioli and parmesan cheese.  These were incredibly delicious.  I didn't miss those fried oysters at all.  Well, maybe a tiny bit.  I chose a garden salad for my side dish.

Sweet Harold selected the broiled fish of the day which, happily for him, was flounder.  He had a garden salad with blue cheese dressing.  Perfectly cooked and well seasoned, this was a great choice!

Our server, Holland, was great and so polite.  She was attentive and helpful.  Our drinks were refilled regularly.  She's a great asset to the restaurant.

There are several locations throughout the state and along the Gulf Coast.
