Dining Out Republic of Ireland: Bailey Bar and Cafe, Dublin, Ireland

Tuesday we took a train from Belfast to Dublin for an exciting and fun-filled day of exploring and dining.  Of all the restaurants to choose from, Bailey Bar and Grill was our choice.  Yes, we dined outdoors because the weather was surprisingly agreeable for our day with sunny skies and temps in the high 40s all day.  We sat at the far left table in the picture above.  The hostess provided lap blankets for us in case we got chilly!

I took a picture of the menu this time because the lighting was excellent and I wanted you to be able to see all the offerings they have.

Of course, Sweet Harold started with a Guinness!

Such a wonderful day of making memories with my son as the best tour guide ever!

I spied smoked salmon with cream cheese and capers on the menu and my decision was made.  I looked no further!

The smoked salmon was lightly flavored and the cream cheese was rich and creamy.  The capers added the perfect touch of brine to offset the richness of the salmon and cheese.  The Guinness bread had a distinct dense texture which isn't my favorite, but the flavor was yummy.  The side salad was fresh and crisp and lightly dressed.  Delicious!

I ordered a cup of potato and leek soup to go along with my sandwich and salad.  Served nice and hot and subtly seasoned.  It was a treat!

Nathan selected the Ploughman's Sandwich with side salad. If you're unfamiliar with a Ploughman's Sandwich here's the story:

The medieval poem 'Pierce the Ploughman's Crede', written around 1394, mentions the Ploughman's lunch as combination of bread, cheese and beer. It makes sense that it was the lunch option of choice for farm labourers as the ingredients were easy to get hold of and were their main source of fats and protein.

Bailey's version consists of baked ham, Dubliner cheddar cheese, and relish on toasted Ciabatta bread.  He gobbled up every bite and didn't offer me a taste, so I'm going to assume it was wonderful.  lol

Now to the part of the post you've all been waiting for!  Sweet Harold's daily fish and chips and mushy peas report!

Another very large portion of cod, nicely fried, a cute metal basket of chips, along with a cup of mushy peas, and a nice serving of salad.  He enjoyed the fish and chips, the side salad was a welcomed addition to the meal.  He wasn't thrilled with the mushy peas as this serving was not well seasoned (for him) and was very thin in consistency.

Bonus points for presentation, though!

And an added photo of the scene from across the street from our table just because it caught my eye.
